Types Of Automobiles

Asuse encounter several automobile types in our daily lives as we deliver the best automobile accessories, but we don’t know how many types of automobiles exist in the world. Today we are going to discuss the different types of automobiles in this article.

Automobiles are classified on the following basis:

1) Based On The Purpose Of The Vehicle

The vehicles are divided into passenger vehicles and goods vehicles based on their intended use. Passenger vehicles are those that transport people, and goods vehicles are those that transport supplies or other items. The following list includes a few instances of these cars.

  • Passenger vehicles-  cars, buses, jeeps, and autorickshaws.
  • Goods vehicle- trucks, tractors

2) Based On The Load Capacity Of The Vehicle

The vehicles are divided into light motor vehicles and heavy motor vehicles based on their carrying capacity. Light motor vehicles are smaller, lighter, and capable of transporting light objects. However, heavy motor vehicles have a huge mass, a larger size, and the ability to transport very heavy loads. For example

  • Light motor vehicles are cars, scooters, bikes, autos
  • Heavy motor vehicles are buses, trains, tractors, trucks

3) Based On The Fuel Used In The Vehicle

When it comes to categorizing automobiles, the fuel that is used is a crucial factor. The quality of the fuel has a significant impact on the vehicle’s efficiency and performance criteria.

The different types of vehicles can be classified according to the fuel they use: petrol, diesel, electric, steam, and gas. For example-

  • Petrol vehicles- cars, motorcycles, jeeps, scooters
  • Diesel vehicle- car, bus, tractor, truck
  • Electric car- forklift, battery truck
  • Steam carriages- steam road roller
  • Gas vehicles- CNG vehicles

These days, electric vehicles such as Tesla and Mahindra Battery Cars are now on the road. Their power comes from batteries. The electricity used in solar vehicles is produced by solar photovoltaic cells, which turn sunlight directly into electricity. Solar vehicles are a type of electric vehicle. Currently, these types of vehicles are not available on the market for commercial use, but they will be commonplace in the future.

4) Based On The Number Of Wheels Vehicles Has

Vehicles are categorized into two-, three-, four-, six-, or eight-wheelers, depending on how many wheels they have. For example-

  • Two-wheeler- motorcycles, Scooters, Moped
  • Three-wheeler- Tempos, Road rollers
  • Four-wheeler- Car, Jeep, Bus, Tractor
  • Six-wheeler- Bus, Truck, Gun carriage Vehicle
  • Eight- or more wheelers- Car transporting vehicle, Rocket Transporter

5) Based On The Driving End of the vehicles

An automobile vehicle can be divided into two categories if we focus on the driving end.

  • Right side drive- Belgium and Ethiopia use right-side driving end vehicles
  • Left side drive- India, Australia, and Bangladesh use left side driving end vehicles

6) Based On The Suspension System Of The Vehicle

  • Independent Suspension System- it is frequently utilised in the vehicle’s front axle. With this suspension system, just one wheel moves in response to the state of the road, with little to no impact on the other wheel—suspension system, such as the MacPherson Strut, Wishbone, etc.
  • Non-independent or Rigid Suspension System- In this instance, one axle is used to support both wheels. That implies that when one wheel comes into touch with a bump or uneven road, the other will also shift position and may tilt or move upward or downward. Solid axle leaf springs and solid axle coil springs are frequently used in heavy-duty vehicles like trucks, buses, and other commercial vehicles.
  • Air Suspension System– This suspension mechanism uses air, as the name implies. Here, an airbag that serves as a suspension system receives its air supply from an air compressor while being compressed to 5.6-7 kg/square meter of pressure.

Cleaning of your car is necessary and you can check why it is important to clean or change your car filter regularly in our article here.

  • Pneumatic air suspension system- This is an electrically operated air suspension system. It consists of an electronic control unit (ECU) that regulates the air pressure inside the airbags in response to bumps or uneven surfaces. A motor also powers the air compressor and control unit.

7) Based On The Engine Location Of The Vehicle

Different types of vehicles have other arrangements for their engines.

Based on the location of the engines, vehicles are classified on the following basis:

  • Front Engine- The engine in these automobiles is situated above or in front of the front axle, at the front of the vehicle. These automobiles have a front end weight.
  • Mid Engine- The engine with this setup is placed close to the vehicle’s back end but in front of the rear axle. The weight of these cars is spread evenly.
  • Rear Engine- The engine is situated behind the rear axle in this system.

8) Based On The Transmission System Of The Vehicle

There are three categories of automobiles based on their transmission systems:

  • Manual Transmission System- It is also referred to as a conventional transmission system because it uses a friction clutch that is attached to the driving shaft. When a driver needs to change gears, he or she must first press the clutch with their foot before manually shifting gears with either their right or left hand, depending on the country.
  • Automatic Transmission system- This kind of transmission method is very common today. In this case, a torque converter is used to transfer rotational energy, and the computer system of the car uses planetary gears, clutches, and brakes to regulate gear changes.
  • Semi-automatic and Dual-Clutch Transmission System- It is a hybrid gearbox system with manual and automatic modes. This kind of transmission system’s gear shifts too quick.
  • Continuously Variable Transmission System- This replace gears with belts and pulleys in this type of transmission system. The transmission mechanism is automated as well.

9) Based On The Body System Of The Vehicle

This kind of vehicle can be divided into various categories, including:

  • Two-door sedan- This kind of car has two doors and a sporty appearance.
  • Hardtop- It has a fixed rooftop that may or may not be detachable.
  • Four-door sedan- This type of vehicle has four doors.
  • Station wagon- The car’s roof is expanded at the back.
  • Convertible- It might or might not have a roof.
  • Van- Typically, it’s used to convey cargo.
